Falling Between Two Stools

if something falls between two stools, it fails because it is neither one type of thing nor another and if someone falls between two stools, they fail because they try to combine two different types of thing that cannot be combined

I have to confess, I wasn't familiar with this expression and stumbled on while I was trying to find something cute or clever to say about this picture.  But I was struck by it and how it seems to apply to me and my life, which is complex, to say the least.  I'm always trying to be too many things to too many people and never sure if success at one isn't somehow failure to another. But if failing is falling, success is standing and I seem to manage to stay on my feet.  As I did here, despite adequate seating, at the Oxwood on a fun Saturday back in September.
